Fairacres Elementary School students, including Kayleigh Armijo, 8, Ella Castillo, 8, and Isaiah Talamantes in the foreground — recite a poem with their classmates using the Methods in Learning Kinesthetically, or MILK, which is an interactive children’s program that promotes literacy through movement. While performing the activity, the students are reciting “I plan ahead and set goals all the time. Always think before I act and begin with the end in mind.” Fairacres third-grade teacher Victoria Gier worked with the New Mexico State University Kinesiology and Dance Department to implement the program, which is now in it’s fourth year at the elementary school. “The students are 100 percent engaged while participating in the program, it brings the joy back into learning,” said principal Kathy Norris. Las Cruces Public Schools students returned to school Monday to begin the 2015-16 year.
