Laboratorio de Biomechanica Capabilities
The NMSU Laboratorio de Biomechanica has fast become one of the premier bio-mechanics research laboratories in the Southwestern United States. In recent years, the acquisition of various instrumentation has expanded the data collection capabilities of the laboratory as well as increasing the opportunity for student involvement.
Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry
Housed within the NMSU Laboratorio de Biomechanica is the Hologiq – W Fan Beam Dual X-ray absoptiometry (DXA) unit. The DXA unit is now considered the “gold standard” for body composition analysis and has provided the lab with the ability to assess body composition and mass distribution at levels previously unobtainable. With our DXA unit, we are now able to determine total body, regional, and sub-regional levels of bone, fat, and lean mass distribution as well as bone area and density.
Also housed within the NMSU Laboratory de Biomechanica is our state of the art General Electric Logiq Digital Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Unit. With this unit, we are able to capture high resolution images of bone and soft tissue. We are also able to utilize specialized software to measure morphometric characteristics with these images. Basic data collection capabilities include the measurement of tendon width, depth, cross-sectional area (CSA) as well as alterations at the musculo-tendon junction in an effort to assess the impact of various training and sport activities on connective tissue.
The Lab currently utilizes a 4-channel Biopac wireless surface electromyography (sEMG) unit capable of collection data describing the muscle activity generated during various tasks.
