Athletic Training Program

The New Mexico State University Athletic Training Program (ATP) was initially accredited in 1986 by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA).  The NMSU ATP is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited. The programs next comprehensive review by the CAATE will occur in 2019-2020.

The NMSU ATP has a competitive application process required of students interested in pursuing a Bachelors of Science degree in Athletic Training.  Graduates from the NMSU ATP meet the requirements necessary to sit for the Board of Certification Examination (BOC).

The New Mexico State University ATP is committed to providing challenging didactic and clinical experiences which prepare students to take the BOC examination upon graduation and upon passing the exam are eligible to work as a Athletic Trainer (AT) or Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC).

Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing, and rehabilitating injuries resulting from physical activity.  As part of the complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician, and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches, and parents.  Athletic Trainers (AT) may be found in a variety of settings such as:  high school, collegiate, professional athletics, rehabilitation or industrial clinics, and military instillation.
